Westchester Disabled On The Move, Inc. is
a not-for profit community based organization. It is a non-residential
independent living center for people with disabilities. WDOMI is
part of a national network of Independent Living Centers dedicated to
in dependence and equal rights for individuals with disabilities. Westchester
Disabled On The Move, Inc. is staffed and governed by people with disabilities.
If you feel overwhelmed because you have a disability and you need assistance
in gaining your independence we can assist you. We offer assistance in the following areas: Housing Advice; Advocacy; Benefits Advice; Information and Referral; Support Groups; Peer Counseling; and Personal and Family Counseling. A disability is any condition that affects a person's physical, mental or emotional ability to deal with daily activities. Our goal at WDOMI is to help people with disabilities GAIN AS MUCH PERSONAL FREEDOM AS POSSIBLE! Most of our staff members have a disability, and have overcome obstacles by learning independent living skills. We have first-hand experience with the common problems that face individuals with a disability. Although it is more difficult and sometimes more time consuming for people with disabilities to live productive lives, it is totally possible. However, it is also our experience that some issues can overwhelm people. This is why we offer a helping hand to the person with a disability to access every opportunity to achieve independence. A person with a disability has as much right to a normal life as everyone else. In fact, we are protected by many federal laws and regulations, such as the ADA (The Americans With Disabilities Act) and the Rehabilitation Act. We must always remember that we are members of society who have families, go to work and school, drive cars, ride trains and buses, and visit public places. Sometimes, however, society does not make it easy for us to accomplish our goals and live independent lives. This is where we can help. WDOMI works with individual consumers and when necessary takes action to bring about systemic change. WDOMI is committed to solving problems involving living with a disability while at the same time preparing our consumers to solve their own problems in the future. Our office at WDOMI is located at 984 No. Broadway in Yonkers on the first floor, Suite L-01. Feel free to call us for more information at 914-968-4717 |
