Scott Smith For the past three months, I have had the privilege to utilize a computer for the first time at the ripe age of 49 years old. I am able to use the computer through the use of Dragon Dictate. Dragon Dictate is a voice recognition software that allows users to produce text as they speak. Because I have cerebral palsy, I am unable to use my hands effectively on the computer keyboard. Dragon Dictate, however enables me to use my voice to make the computer work. I am now able to write this article on the computer utilizing Dragon Dictate. The advent of assistive technology for people with disabilities has opened up the world. It has created many opportunities to participate in all areas of life, especially work. It is amazing for me to look at all of the changes that have occurred with regard to assistive technology. I am now able to utilize a computer for the first time, because of the Dragon Dictate and the other technological augmentation that can be done with a computer. Assistive technology has created a world where we can all start out on an equal playing field, without having to worry whether our disability will affect our ability in daily living, work, play or leisure activities. I have been told, I am addicted to my computer. In my considered opinion, I have now joined the world of technology in a global attempt to communicate to the world. We as individuals with disabilities must realize that we need to advocate to make the world a better place for us where everyone has an equal chance to participate in all aspect of society. Assistive Technology levels the field so that a barrier free society can be a reality. |
